My students love secret messages – you know, using a special code to figure out what the message is. And, since it’s December, and I’m trying desperately to keep my kids engaged, why not have December Secret Messages?
What are December Secret Messages?
Students use a special key to crack the code, and solve the secret message. Each message has a December theme including:
- Winter/Snowmen
- Christmas
- Animals
- Santa
Each message asks a question, and then provides the answer, but all in a secret message way.
In the key provided, each letter of the alphabet is assigned a themed picture. Students then use the key to solve message.
I recommend printing the key on a colored piece of paper and having students keep it in a special place, so they can use the same key for the entire month. I have my students put their names on the back so that if it ends up on the floor, we can get it back to the owner.
You could also print the key on colored card stock, laminate, and then reuse each year.
How Can I Use Them in My Classroom?
- Early Finishers
- Centers
- Word Work
- Partner Work
- Morning Work
My students LOVE solving Secret Messages. Maybe, I should start teaching content this way – anything, to get them learning, right?
I’ve being using December Secret Messages during morning work, early finishes, centers, word work, and even as a rewards for good behavior. Seriously, my 2nd grades don’t get tired of these things!
