Every year I spend about two weeks reading gingerbread stories, and doing all the gingerbread things.
My BEST tip: do your gingerbread unit AFTER Christmas. Say WHHAAAT?
I know, I know. But seriously, I have so many Christmas books (you can read about those HERE) I want to share with my class, that there’s just not time for Gingerbread too. So, I’ve been teaching it after the break for a few years, and it’s the perfect way to get back in the swing of things.
Gingerbread stories lend themselves well to so many different reading concepts including:
- Sequencing
- Characters
- Problem/Solution
- Compare and Contrast
- Beginning, Middle, End
Plus, I love having students discuss which version they liked best and why (opinion/persuasive writing).I actually made a Gingerbread Teaching Unit, which you can find HERE.
