Chocolate Fever Novel Study

I love doing novel studies with my 2nd graders! They get so excited, and so invested in the characters! We end the year with our Chocolate Fever Novel Study, and it’s by far our favorite!

I’ve done the Chocolate Fever Novel Study with my 2nd grade class 5 years running, and as long as they continue to love, I don’t plan to stop.

While perfect for any time of the year, I really enjoy saving Chocolate Fever as our last novel study for the year.

Throughout this post, you’ll find Amazon Affiliate links. This means I receive a small commission if you purchase something through that link, at no extra cost to you, that helps keep my blog running and helps fund giveaways!

What grades would enjoy Chocolate Fever?

Personally, I’ve only used it with 2nd grade.

If using Chocolate Fever as a novel study, like I do, then I think 2nd and 3rd grades are perfect, and will find Henry Green totally relatable!

I also think that first graders would enjoy it as just a read-aloud, but would require some stopping and explaining along the way.

How long does the Chocolate Fever Novel Study last?

With 12 chapters, plus lots of extension activities, I’ve found that it typically takes between 2 and 3 weeks to complete.

But it depends on how many chapters you read per day, and what activities (if any) you choose to do with the book.

How is a novel study different from a read aloud?

With a read aloud, I am just reading aloud the story to my students. Sure, we might stop to chat about an idea, but for the most part, I’m not teaching them any specific skill/strategy/concept.

A read aloud is truly students enjoying listening to a story. Typically, the teacher has the only copy of the book.

For a novel study, I really like for each student to have a copy of the book when possible, but this certainly isn’t a must.

In addition, we aren’t just reading for enjoyment. We’ll have discussions, projects, activities, dive into vocabulary, and maybe even have chapter quizzes. Obviously, these things compliment the book and add to the enjoyment of the book, rather than take away from it.
